In a move that bridges world-class clinical expertise with Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurial drive, the Cleveland Clinic has announced a strategic collaboration with Khosla Ventures to accelerate the development and adoption of transformative healthcare technologies. The partnership combines the Cleveland Clinic’s strengths in research, clinical care, and innovation with Khosla’s venture ecosystem and deep technology insight.
In this interview with Medtech Spectrum, JD Friedland, Partner at Cleveland Clinic Innovations, shares how the collaboration will fast-track AI, digital health, and next-generation therapeutic solutions, translating bold ideas into clinically meaningful outcomes across Cleveland Clinic’s global network.
What motivated the Cleveland Clinic to form this strategic collaboration with Khosla Ventures, and how does it align with your broader innovation and research priorities?
We felt it was a good fit as the collaboration pairs Cleveland Clinic’s strengths in clinical care, biomedical research, and innovation with Khosla’s venture expertise and network of entrepreneurs. With Cleveland Clinic’s wealth of knowledge and real-world clinical experience, paired with Khosla’s strategic insight, entrepreneurial mindset, and bold vision for the future, this collaboration is poised to accelerate transformational innovation, foster groundbreaking technologies, with an ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes on a global scale. This was a natural evolution of the nature of our relationship with Khosla, which has been evolving and advancing in recent years.
The Cleveland Clinic has a long history of pioneering medical innovation. How does this partnership enhance your ability to identify, validate, and adopt emerging technologies faster?
This relationship brings together Cleveland Clinic’s global research and clinical care with one of Silicon Valley’s leading investors in healthcare and technology. Together, we will evaluate opportunities to collaborate on new and existing companies with Khosla Ventures, utilizing Cleveland Clinic physicians to pilot and validate real-world impact — accelerating the journey to implementation. For Cleveland Clinic, this creates a direct pipeline to emerging technologies — especially in AI, digital health, and next-generation therapeutics — so we can evaluate, co-develop, and scale what truly performs.
Through this collaboration, startups from the Khosla Ventures portfolio will gain access to Cleveland Clinic clinicians and facilities. How will you ensure these engagements translate into clinically meaningful outcomes rather than just pilot projects?
Our goal is to enhance efficiencies and patient experience. Together we will carefully plan to pursue the opportunities that have the most potential to make a difference, using an objective prioritization and optimization process.
AI and digital health are central to this partnership. What specific areas of care or operational efficiency do you see as most ripe for AI-driven transformation within the Cleveland Clinic?
In addition to AI, our collaboration will focus on investing in companies using medical technology, therapeutics and diagnostics as well those that are focused on home-based and value-based care models.
Many health systems face challenges in integrating new technologies into existing workflows. What lessons has the Cleveland Clinic learned that can help accelerate adoption while maintaining quality and safety?
We have successfully deployed and partnered with digital health solutions partners in the last few years, including AI ambient listening for note taking and AI in clinical trial recruitment. The most successful solutions empower our caregivers to deliver better care more efficiently and to significantly improve the patient experience. Using a collaborative approach to adoption with our caregivers has enhanced our ability to adopt new technologies at the enterprise level.
Looking ahead, what does success look like for Cleveland Clinic in this collaboration and how do you see it shaping the future of healthcare innovation across your global network?
This partnership aims to reimagine healthcare delivery and create solutions that address some of the most pressing challenges in the field. We are looking to advance the breadth and scope of care at Cleveland Clinic and across the industry by delivering improvements and value in discrete use cases in Northeast Ohio and around the world.
