ShardaCare-HealthCity Successfully Performs Sibling Kidney Transplant for Dialysis-Dependent CKD Patient

The procedure was ABO-compatible, meaning the donor and recipient had compatible blood groups, which can reduce the risk of organ rejection

Doctors at ShardaCare-HealthCity have successfully performed an ABO-compatible kidney transplant in a 40-year-old man with chronic kidney disease (CKD), after his 45-year-old sister donated her kidney to him.

The patient, Jitendra Singh Gangwar, had been living with CKD for more than two years and was dependent on dialysis three times a week. As his condition deteriorated, his sister, Beena Kumari Gangwar, volunteered to donate her right kidney.

Following medical evaluation, fluid management and optimisation of the patient’s overall health, doctors determined that he was stable enough to undergo transplantation. The procedure was ABO-compatible, meaning the donor and recipient had compatible blood groups, which can reduce the risk of organ rejection.

The transplant was performed by Dr Anil Sharma, Director, Kidney Transplant & Urology, ShardaCare-HealthCity. Both the donor and recipient recovered well following the procedure.

Commenting on the case, Dr Sharma said the transplant represented both a medical achievement and the bond between the siblings. He highlighted Beena’s decision to donate her kidney as an expression of care and protection for her younger brother.

Dr Ahmed Kamaal, Director, Urology & KTP, ShardaCare-HealthCity, said Jitendra’s dependence on dialysis for more than two years had significantly affected his health before his sister came forward as a donor. He added that the successful transplant has given the patient a renewed opportunity for life, with both donor and recipient recovering well.

The case also highlights the role of living-donor kidney transplantation in patients with advanced CKD who are medically suitable for the procedure. Careful donor and recipient assessment, compatibility testing and pre-transplant optimisation remain important components of the transplant process.
