Germfree and Nuvai integrate AI aseptic monitoring into Smarthood IV compounding platform

The integration adds real-time monitoring of aseptic technique to hospital pharmacy workflows using existing Smarthood cameras, without requiring additional hardware.

Germfree and Nuvai Medical Technologies have partnered to integrate Nuvai’s Aseptique AI-powered aseptic monitoring platform into Germfree’s Smarthood IV compounding workspace.

The integration is designed to give hospital pharmacies real-time visibility into aseptic technique during sterile medication preparation using cameras already built into the Smarthood system.

Traditionally, pharmacy teams rely on periodic assessments of aseptic technique and retrospective microbiological testing to evaluate sterile compounding practices.

By adding Aseptique, the companies aim to shift oversight towards continuous monitoring of how technicians perform aseptic procedures during compounding.

The system does not require additional hardware and instead uses the Smarthood platform’s existing camera infrastructure.

“By combining Smarthood with Aseptique, we are extending the value of a platform our customers already trust,” said Judd Baker, Vice President of Healthcare at Germfree.

“Together, we are giving pharmacy teams actionable insight into aseptic technique and helping strengthen the safety and consistency of IV compounding.”

Aseptique uses machine learning to identify deviations in aseptic technique during medication preparation.

Each technician receives an individual dashboard highlighting technique deviations, while pharmacy leaders can access an enterprise-level view of performance trends across the department.

The companies said the combined platform is intended to support continuous improvement, reinforce best practices and reduce the risk of compounding errors.

Stephen Eckel, Founder and President of Nuvai Medical Technologies, said the integration is intended to improve oversight of sterile medication preparation.

“Aseptique uses machine learning to ensure that every compounded product is prepared sterilely. Nuvai Medical Technologies recognizes that collaborating with Germfree will bring needed technologies to improve patient care by assisting pharmacy departments so that every IV medication is prepared correctly.”

The partnership expands Smarthood’s functionality beyond controlled compounding infrastructure by adding real-time monitoring of technician behaviour and aseptic performance.

The combined platform is intended to give pharmacy teams greater confidence that sterile preparations are produced consistently while maintaining existing compounding workflows.
