Mayo Clinic and Thermo Fisher Scientific Launch Precure to Advance Population-Scale Precision Medicine

Initiative will combine one million biospecimens with longitudinal clinical data and advanced proteomics technologies to uncover early biological signals of disease

Mayo Clinic and Thermo Fisher Scientific are advancing population-scale precision medicine through the launch of Precure, LLC, an initiative designed to generate large-scale biological and clinical data that could help researchers identify the earliest signals of disease and translate them into new opportunities for prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The initiative will bring together data generated from one million biospecimens with longitudinal clinical information, creating a resource intended to deepen researchers’ understanding of how diseases develop, including biological changes that may occur long before symptoms become apparent.

Thermo Fisher Scientific will contribute its proteomics expertise and technologies to the initiative, including the Olink Explore HT platform and Thermo Scientific Orbitrap mass spectrometry. These capabilities will be combined with Mayo Clinic’s clinical and research expertise to analyse biological information at population scale.

The collaboration reflects the growing role of population-scale research in precision medicine, where large collections of biological samples, molecular data and longitudinal health information can enable researchers to identify disease-associated patterns that may be difficult to detect in smaller studies.

According to Marc Casper, Chairman and CEO of Thermo Fisher Scientific, the broader ambition is to help move healthcare towards approaches that are increasingly personalised, predictive and preventative.

Precure is expected to help researchers explore biological signals associated with the earliest stages of disease and potentially identify opportunities for earlier diagnosis, improved patient stratification and the development of more effective therapeutic approaches.

The initiative also builds on Thermo Fisher Scientific’s involvement in major genomics and proteomics research programmes globally. These include the UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project, FinnGen in Finland, Geisinger’s MyCode Community Health Initiative in the United States and Precision Health Research, Singapore (PRECISE-SG100K).

Such programmes are increasingly bringing together genomics, proteomics and clinical information to investigate disease biology across large and diverse populations. The resulting datasets can support biomarker discovery, drug development and a more detailed understanding of individual and population-level disease risk.

With Precure, Mayo Clinic and Thermo Fisher Scientific aim to extend this approach by connecting high-throughput proteomic analysis with extensive longitudinal clinical information.

The initiative could ultimately provide researchers with a deeper view of disease progression—from early molecular changes through clinical manifestation—and support the development of new approaches for prevention, diagnostics and therapeutics.

As population-scale research expands globally, collaborations combining healthcare institutions, life sciences technologies and large longitudinal datasets are expected to play an increasingly important role in translating precision medicine research into improved patient outcomes.
